Catrina sat cross-legged on the narrow bed in the room Ella grace had provided for her. She shifted Davida’s treasure back and forth between her hands, missing her sister terribly in this moment.

Though the act had been a disaster, her sister would have found some way to make light of it. But Davida wasn’t here to bring lightness to the awful situation.

When she entered the room, prepared to amaze the citizens of Silverpines with the graceful dance of the Butterfly Esther Dubois had performed for countless audiences, they all became silent as stone.

Horror, not wonder, had filled their faces.

Well, except for the thorn. He had stared at her with an intense expression that made her wonder what was going on behind that sandstone gaze. His eyes had roved over her, lingering on her legs but she didn’t sense any lewd or lasciviousness regard behind it. If anything, if she wasn’t mistaken, she could have almost sworn she saw a hint of appreciation in his eyes.

But she could be mistaken. In fact, she knew she was mistaken just as she had been about tonight’s performance.

Catrina sighed and fell back on the bed. Why had she run away from the circus, from the only life that she’d ever known? It had been such a good idea—no, not a good idea, but the only thing to do when Roger threatened to take Davida’s treasure and sell it to “interested parties”.

Tears beaded in the corner of her eye. A second later, a hot trail of liquid slid downward to land in the cusp of her ear.

If she had just paid more attention to Miss Nora all those years ago, Davida would still be alive. She wouldn’t be here in a room no bigger than a rabbit’s warren and—

“Cat?”

Ella Grace’s muffled voice sounded through the closed door. Catrina turned away. She wasn’t up for company.

“Cat?” Ella Grace repeated. “May I come in?”

Wiping the tears from her face, she sat up. What was she supposed to say—no to the proprietress of the inn? Since she was about to get thrown out of the hotel, she might as well take it with graciousness.

“Yes, please.”

The door opened and Ella Grace walked in, a concerned expression on her face. “You have visitors.”

She stood aside to allow Elena and Victoria to come in.

Catrina jumped up with a shriek. A wave of joy washed over her as she launched herself over to their presence. “Elena! Victoria!”

Sobs overtook her body as fresh tears found a way outside of their ducts. Why she was crying, she didn’t quite know. Maybe it was the release of everything or maybe, because she hadn’t cried for so long.

“I heard what happened and wanted to make sure you were doing all right,” Elena told her after the storm had passed. Victoria handed her a handkerchief to mop up her face.

“I must look a fright,” Catrina said as she made use of the linen.

“I had no idea you were a performer, Cat,” Victoria said. “How intriguing!”

“The people out there didn’t think so,” Catrina said with a sniff as she remembered the horrified silence.
